Alternative Pathways Project Report It is well established that some Black and Minority Ethnic patients with a mental illness are more likely to be detained under the Mental Health Act 1983. The Alternative Pathways Project was launched by the East London NHS Foundation Trust to explore and change pathways to mental health care for Black and Minority Ethnic service users. Black communities, mental health and the criminal justice system NACRO produces this report over the discrimination faced by black people who come into contact with justice agencies. This briefing examines the problems, underlyiing causes and recent policies and try to make recommendations for change.
